I represented the transition between middle school and high school with the smooth strokes at the bottom. The top has hard small cuts, which has a line through the middle. The line through the middle, which is made up of long chunk of negative space, represents the summer. The right is middle school since it is much easier than high school so it is smooth chunks of negative space removed

Maya | Artist Statement In the lower half of the silhouette I drew and cut out pieces that were fluid and flowing. This represents my life at the moment as I have a set routine at St. Mary’s that I follow everyday. In the middle of the piece, I cut circle-like shapes to represent the transition. The top half of the silhouette is very rigid, almost puzzle-like to represent the uncertainty of the future. |
Grace | Artist Statement My silhouette is used to represent two paths heading to the same end goal. I tried to represent this with negative and positive space that flowed and pointed in the same direction with a mix of abstract and geometric cuts. Near the bottom is my current situation. It is very clustered with a plant amid the chaos, with not a lot of room to grow. This then transitions to growth going up with more space, but still restricted. |

Within my life, I am making a transition from St. Mary to high school. I am afraid of making this transition because I am leaving the only school I’ve ever gone to. In the middle of my silhouette, there are two blobs that represent eyes. Surrounding the blobs, are jagged blades, which represent fear. Outside of the blades are small blots that represent the people I will meet in high school. I must overcome my fear of high school and make it through the jagged blades in order to get to the bright side.

My project uses purple in the beginning to portray the stress and clutter of school and life. In the middle I used red to represent pain and black to represent stress and mistakes. In the end, the yellow represents success and happiness but there is one black brush stroke because even in success and happiness there is still room for mistakes. My silhouette shows transition from which is real and to which is fake and when you cut away something that is fake you are able to see it for what it really is.

Sierra | Artist Statement Within my painting as well as silhouette, the bottom portion is very cluttered but as it progresses the space becomes broad with many shapes going each way. This can relate to what is currently happening in my life during my transition from eighth to high school. Although life may seem slow and cluttered, it will soon begin into a new start with different people, classes, and teacher. This work can give off the emotion of stress of new life. |

My project has the message of moving forward into the future. There is movement, waves, and flow. Happiness and times of sadness are bestowed in my work of art. Middle School has been a blessing and so will the next school I attend. I nonobjectively showed flames in the painting and liquid water using fluid brush strokes! I also showed how sometimes during my basketball games I raged but cooled down at school in the presence of my friends.

The lighter colors in the painting represent easy homework. The ‘easy’ or known shapes represent the teachers we know. The darker colors represent the harder homework and the weird shapes represent the new teachers we don’t know but will meet next year. In our silhouette there are no more colors, but the shapes are similar and show the same idea.

We made night and day to show the transition from fifth to sixth grade. Day is chaotic, while night is peaceful. We showed day with bright colors and large shapes. We showed night with dark scary colors and smaller shapes. We cut out the worst parts of the night knowing that sixth grade will be hard but get better. We cut out the best parts of day to show leaving our memories behind in fifth grade.

We represented change of seasons. We used weird abstract shapes. We also mixed colors. It related to transition because the seasons and weather change just like life. The silhouette also represents the seasons but doesn’t have color that made our painting cool.
